New Problems for Old: The Institution of Capitalist Economic and Environmental Irrationality in China

Richard Smith

Abstract: The aim of this article is twofold. First, to show that China’s transition to capitalism is less salubrius than its western champions would have us believe and instead of solving China's problems is simply creating new, albeit different, problems in the place of old – new contradictions and irrationalities, particularly with respect to the environment, new inefficiencies, and vast new forms of waste. Second, to argue that the road to environmental, and also economic, rationality is to be found not in the market but in democratic planning.
